The Linux Foundation is a non-profit consortium, founded in 2007. dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux. They have a version of Linux called "Automotive Grade Linux" which is designed as a secure but useful operating system which can be used in the automotive world. When the product fully matures they will have available downloads that can be turned into bootable USB sticks and bootable disks. Development looks pretty far along, with many of the pieces to a car operating system well thought out with specs for the different sections well publicized.

Again, this is an open source project, where software is developed in the open, and easily available. You are encouraged to view the source code and to download the scource code (free) and modify it to your heart's content.
